Wireless technology has proved to be a boon in communications as it offers us access to networks without the use of wires and cables which can only reach so far. Cell phones, radios, paging transmitters and many of the communications devices we use all run on wireless technology in one form or another.
The benefits of wireless technology hold more importance in industrial and law enforcement settings where access to real-time data is needed. Take radio modems, for example, which function using radio waves. These waves are independent of satellite and telecommunication networks utilized by ordinary users which means there’s less congestion and transmitting of data is much faster. Of course, certain factors determine how well the modems work such as radio sensitivity, antenna height and the construction of the system.

Paging transmitters are another example of radio communications systems which are still widely used despite the emergence and widespread use of cell phones. These simple devices have none of the fancy features mobile phones support. Messaging is possible, however, as is the provision of beeps or tones and voice messaging.
The biggest benefit of pagers is their ability to cover a wider network as compared to cell phones. Mobile phone networks can only extend so far. The farther down in a building one goes, for example, the less likely he is to have phone reception. In settings such as hospitals which are large, relying solely on cell phones is impractical which is why paging transmitters are regularly used.
The technology is such that pagers can be integrated with PBX systems. Environments like hospitals and government installations facilitate integration to get the most out of paging transmitters whether they’re one-way or two-way models.
The humble radio continues to be utilized to the fullest. Tried and trusted, it’s used for serious communication by law enforcement authorities, fire fighters, paramedics and space shuttle astronauts as well as by ordinary citizens with a love for wireless technology (ham radios, for example).
Cell phones, TV broadcasts, RC toys, satellite communications and garage door openers all rely on wireless technology through radio waves to function and bring us the communications systems we’ve learnt to rely on to this day. It’s safe to say that it is perhaps one of the most significant discoveries humans have made and the loss of which will propel us decades into the past.
There are a few limitations to wireless technology that bears looking into. Unlike wired systems that work as well as any other so long as the cables can be extended, wireless systems cannot cover hundreds of miles. Certain areas outside the network can’t be accessed so if you were to go out of these zones, communication wouldn’t be possible. Of course, this is not so much a limitation as an accepted aspect of all communications systems because even wired technology can extend only so far.
Wireless devices run on batteries which means you must have an ample store. What has changed over the years is the use of rechargeable batteries. So instead of purchasing new batteries every time they drain all that’s needed is access to a power outlet to have them charge to their full state.
As is evident, most communications systems we use today rely on wireless technology because the benefits far outweigh the few limitations. No other technology has created such a massive market for wireless devices and there’s no doubt that this demand will continue to be sustained for many more decades.
